After dog fights were forbidden in the middle of the 19th century, bull and terrier and bulldog breeders started looking for other challenges for their dogs.
James Hinks from Birmingham is the "creator" of the Bullterrier. He bred the "Bull-and-Terrier", a rather rough and heavy dog with other breeds to create a elegant, intelligent and phisically more enduring dog, a "fashion accessory" for the English Gentlemen.
Although his breeding was recorded really well the last 3 years, there are still some things missing. It's known though that he mixed in breeds as the Dalmatian and the White English Terrier though.
He named the new race "Bullterrier".
We recommend the books "Pity Me!" and "James Hinks, Master Craftsman", both written by Kevin Kane, you can read up the true story about the creation of the Bullterrier - and not fairy tales describing the Bullterrier as a so called "fighting dog".

The Bullterrier is not only unique considering his general appearance, also his incredibly friendly behaviour towards humans is something special about this breed.
Calling these two characteristics his own, it's no wonder that such great personalities started getting interested in this breed.
Serious breeders in every country wouldn't breed a dog, who'd be rough and ready to fight or rumble, no wonder the friendly and outgoing, sweet nature became a trademark for this breed soon.
The next sensation was that the new Bullterrier didn't have to be cropped, the ears were up naturally.
Despite his unique looks, the Bullterrier makes a great companion and family dog as well.
He likes to be challenged phisically, may it be hiking or jogging and he doesn't hunt. He's a great family dog, very good with children and not too dumb at pet obedience school.
The Bullterrier and his little brother, the Miniature Bullterrier, quickly became a "must-have", even Princess Anne has one.
The ÖBTC - Austrian Bullterrier Club - looks after this special breed under the motto "Numquam solus vades" - You'll never walk alone!
It's a double meaning ... on the one hand the Bullterrier as the companion for life, on the other the organisation offering their members a circle of friends who are willing to help any time.
If you want to know more about these "White Gentlemen", who don't have to be only white, please get in touch with the ÖBTC or attend one of our activities.
